EDUCATION MATTERS.
TRAINING COLLEGE SITE.
CONFERENCE WITH AUTHORITIES.
The question of the site for the proposed new training college in Auckland was re« ferred to the Minister for Education, the director of education and other officials of the department by a member of the Auckland Education Board, Mr. H. S. W. King, during a recent visit to Wellington. Reporting to the board yesterday, Mr. King said the departmental officials pointed out that the question was purely one of finance. The Minister hoped to view suggested sites on the occasion of his next visit to Auckland. The "quarry site reserve at Mount Eden was favoured, but the department thought the citizens of Auckland should assist in raising funds by public effort to subsidise the grant made by the Government. Mr. King also reported that it was impossible for the department to give authority to the board for the appointment of school janitors as the Act already provided for the cleansing of schools and grants were made to committees for that purpose. He considered the position regarding the supply of cinematograph machines to schools was hopeless so far as the department was concerned. The constitution of" a metropolitan school area had commended itself, after explanation, to -the department, and he had been assured that the Education Bill to be presented at the next session would contain the necessary provisions.
