POLICE COURT NEWS.
ALLEGED THEFT OF SUGAR. ACCUSED AGAIN REMANDED. The six men who were arrested at the end of last month on charges of having been concerned in the theft of sugar from the Colonial Sugar Refining Company, appeared on remand in the Police Court yesterday, before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M. Accused were remanded for a week on the application of Chief-Detective McMahon. Bail was allowed as before. DISTURBANCE AFIER RACES. A disturbance at the entrance to the railway platform at the Ellerslie racecourse after the races on Saturday resulted in the- appearance of Alfred Ensor and Craddock Dufty (Mr. Moo£v), charged with having been disorderly while drunk, and having assaulted David Hiskins, a railway guard. Ensor was further charged with having assaulted Sidney Pttdney. Both men pleaded guilty. It -was stated that accused attempted to rush through the crowd and push past the guard. When prevented one of them struck him in the face. Had it not been for the timely arrival of the police a serious not might have occurred. Great difficulty was experienced in getting the men into a car after arrest. The guard's coat was torn in the struggle. Accused were each fined £2, and ordered to pay £1 16s 3d expenses.
