HOUSING A HEADMASTER.
DIFFICULTY AT BAYFIELD. COMMITTEE'S PROPOSAL. The housing problem is very acute in Ponsonby and according to a report made to the Schools Committee by a land agent there is not a suitable .house in the district that can be rented for the newlyappointed headmaster of the Bayfield School, Mr. Donald Mclnness. In ibis dilemma, the committee some weeks ago wrote to the Education Board urging that the house on the Courtenay property at Bayfield, recently acquired as a school j area, should be made available as a resiJ deuce for the headmaster, but the board j replied to the effect that it had made other arrangements in regard to the house in question. The matter has now been taken up by residents of Bayfield and at a meeting of j the Schools Committee last evening a j deputation presented a largely-signed petition commending the prompt action :of the committee in endeavouring to j secure the dwelling for the headmaster of ; Bayfield School, it was stated in the ; petition that it was with profound sur- ; prise and regret that the residents learned | that the board had maoo other arrangej meuts and had refused the committees re- ; quest. They would strongly urge that the j board be again approached in the matter. ! The new site was soon to be used a s a ; playing area, and it was contended that i it would be a distinct advantage on that ; account alone to have the headmaster i resident on the property. The members of the deputation stated that if a further request proved meffec- ; tive, it was intended to call an indigna- ! tion meeting of residents. Not one person , approached had refused to sign the peti- • tion. j In thanking the members of the deputa- ; tion for their efforts, the chairman of the ! committee, Mr. W. J. CampbelJ, said that I the representations made would be placed ! before the board and he expressed the hope that the outcome would prove satisfactory.
