THE SENIOR COMPETITION-

FIRST MATCH CONCLUDED

TWO CENTURIES REGISTERED

The opening matches of the Auckland ' Cricket Association's senior competition were concluded on Saturday in fine weather. Owing to the recent rain the wickets were not so good a* on the previous Saturday, nevertheless the play was interesting and some fair scores were made. Ponsonby and Grafton continued their match on No. 1 wicket at Eden Park. When, stumps were drawn on i the first day Ponsonby had made 338 in the - ; first innings. Grafton commenced batr.n- ! on Saturday afternoon and compiled "4"- ' before they were dismissed. C. Snedden con tnbuting 62 and H. Wilson 50. Porwonbv made a very poor showing in their second venture, seven wickets falling for 30 runs. ; As the other three members of the side had Wt the ground the innings had' to close Grafton had about half-an hour to make the 1-6 runs required to win. but when time was! called they had compiled onlv 104 for the I loss ot two wickets. Horspool being 46 not ! out Ponsonby thus won by 95 runs on the first innings. Eden, who had made 261 tor the loss of 'eight wickets against Parnell on the previous Saturday, continued their innings on No. 2 w cket at Eden Park and : carried their score to 293 before they dismissed. Bennett, who was 93 not out ' reached 104 before he was caught, this being the best contribution of the match. Parneil replied with 241, Anthony making 111 before i he was bowled. Eden thus secured a. twopoint win by 52 runs on the first, inning*. North Shore and University concluded their match at Remuera. the latter securing a three-point win. North Shore had made 139 in their first innings and University had lost six wickets for 87 runs when play ceased on the first day. The latter carried their score to 120 before they were dismissed. North Shore were still two men short in their second innings, which produced only 77 runs. Hemus carrying his bat for 16. University required 97 runs to win and they made 103 for the loss of three wickets. PONSONBY V. GRAFTON, E. Horspool and Saunders opened the batting for Grafton, and the score was 19 when the former was caught by Cullimore off N. Snedden. Kingston filled the vacancy, and the board showed 74 when Snedden clean bowled Saunders. Sloman followed, and a few runs later Kingston lifted one to Hamilton at cover-point. Rowntree and Sloman carried the score to 87 before the former chopped one from Smith on to his wicket. C. Snedden was the next batsman, but only three runs had been added when Sloman was stumped by Kelly. H. Wilson joined Snedden, and a good stand was made, the total being raised to 164 before Wilson was bowled by Cullimore. Beveridge assisted Snedden to carry the score to £05. when the former was bowled by Hamilton. Baker then partnered C. Snedden. but almost immediately the former was bowled by N. Snedden. Blundell was the newcomer, and the score was 232 when C. Snedden was caught at the wickets. F. Wilson ! was the last man in, and the total was raised to 243 when he was bowled by N. Snedden. Ponsonby made a very poor showing in their second innings, seven wickets falling for 30 runs. As the other batsmen had left the ground, the innings closed. Two wickets for 104 EDEN V. PARNELL. When stumps were drawn on the opening day Eden playing againßt Parnell. had lost eight wickets lor 261. Bennett and Alexander being 93 and 38, not out. respectively, .these batsmen continued their innings and the score reached 271 when Alexander was bowled by v Martin. R. Taylor was the last batsman and at 295 Bennett, who had made 104, was caught by Somervell off Anthony. Anthony and Badeley were the first batsmen for Parnell and only 12 runs had been made when the latter was bowled by Taylor Moore followed and a fine partnership resulted, the total being raised to 14b before Moore was caught and bowled by Taylor Somervell joined Anthony and the board* showed 161 when Anthony, who had contributed 111, was clean bowled by Taylor. Martin followed and 15 runs were added when he was caught by. Alexander. Mann tilled the vacancy and 190 was reached before he was bowled by Taylor. A. O. Horspool replaced him and two runs later was caught I by Bennett in the outfield.. Turbott then , partnered Somervell but a little later ho was I bowled by Taylor. Stephens followed and i jat 219 he was thrown out, Pcglar joined j Somervell and the total was 253 when ! Whelan caught the latter. McLeod was the 1 last batsman and the innings closed for ■ 241.
