CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
STEAMER FOR LEVUKA. - RESUMPTION ADVOCATED. The Council of the Chamber of. .Com.-. _ merce met ylteterday afternoon. Those present were : Mr. L. L. Louisson, actingchairman, and Messrs. E. L. Stewart, J. H. Jackson, A. Allen, A. A. Martin, and M. M. McCallum. A letter was received from the Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson, in reply to. rente- - — sentations made by the chamber wTtfi--"" regard to the supply of electricity for the city, stating that arrangements had been made for a deputation to meet the Public Services Committee of the City - Council in a fortnight's time. The Levuka, Chamber of Commerce sought assistance in making a protest against the action of the Union Steam Ship Company in cutting out lievoka as a port of call for vessels trading between New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa and Tonga. Until the middle of the present year, it was stated, it had always been the practice of the Navua to call at Levuka as well as at Suva, but this had been discontinued since June, and for -four months there had been no New Zealand boat at Levuka. On the motion of Mr. R. Burns it was decided to write to the Union Steam Ship Company urging that Levuka should again be made a port of ,', . call. The Putaruru District Development Board requested the assistance of the chamber in urging the Government to proceed • immediately with the Arapuni hydro-electric scheme, which apparently was not being pursued as diligently as might be. A resolution was passed urging the Minister to appoint a commission as early as possible, and to expedite the appointment of a third expert to go fully into the matter of foundations fof " the dam.
