THE CITY COUNCIL.
SUPERVISION OF TRAFFIC. v. GRAFTON BRIDGE CORNER. The City Council met last evening. The Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson, presided, and there were also present: Miss E. Melville, Messrs. G. Knight, K. D. Heather, P. M. Mackay, J. Burton, W. J. Holdsworth, F. W. Frinsden, T. Bloodworth, J. Dempsey, G. Baildon, J. Trevithick, J. B. Paterson, J. A. Warnock, H. N. Bagnail, G. Davis, and A. Ht.ll Skelton. The necessity for the supervision of traffic at the corner of Karangahape Road and Symonds Street and the western approach to the Grafton Bridge was emphasised in a report by the acting-traffic inspector. The report stated that a tally of the vehicles passing the intersection showed that between 7.30 a.m. and 8.30 a.m. there were 663 vehicles, exclusive of trams. During the two hours between 4.30 p.m. and 6.30 p.m. there were 1765 vehicles. It was further stated that supervision of the traffic was necessary between 4.30 p.m. and 6 p.m. The position was not improved by the tendency of motor-cars to stop, at the corner of Symonds Street and Karangahape ' Road, near the safety zone. A rearrangement of the traffic staff would obviate the necessity of obtaining police supervision, and a member of the staff would be detailed to control the traffic when possible. The report was adopted. . A request that street stands for hawkers be permanently allocated or that the system in operation in Wellington of disposing of the stands by auction, made by 20 hawkers, was referred to the Finance and Legal Committee. A copy of a resolution passed by the Cutters and Pressers' Union, urging the use of tramway concession tickets on Sundays, was referred to the Public Services Committee. *
