THE WAR MEMORIAL.

A preliminary announcement is made to-day of an appeal to the people of the Auckland Province for funds to erect a memorial of the war and of the deeds and the sacrifices of New Zealand soldiers and sailors. It has already been decided by the provisional committee, and its judgment has been generally approved, that a museum will afford the most effective expression of the feelings with which the citizens of to-day contemplate the war. The intention is to preserve in this building relics of the conflict on sea and land, to establish a permanent record of effort and achievement by the Dominion's youth, and to associate with them the existing collections of the Auckland Institute illustrating the development of civilisation in peace in war. The council of the institute has obtained tentative plans, by which it is estimated that a building to satisfy the requirements of the museum and to serve as an inspiring memorial of the war will cost not less than £130,000. Already £52,000 has been promised from the Government, the Auckland Savings Bank and the Auckland Racing Club, and an appeal is now to be made throughout the province for the balance of £78,000. The amount required is certainly large, but it should be achieved if a response is made by all who treasure the memories of fallen soldiers and desire to preserve for future generations the inspiration of the war's heroism and self-sacrifice.
