A War Office communique on operations in Mesopotamia states that the garrison of the camp at Samawa railway station, on the Lower Euphrates, south of Bagdad, was being withdrawn to the town, an armoured train covering the operation, when the train broke down, and was rushed by 4000 insurgents. The crew made a resolute defence, and inflicted 500 casualties before they were finally overpowered. Forty, including two British officers, are reported missing. The insurgents captured with the train a 13-pounder, three -machine-guns, and 40 boxes of ammunition. Reports state that owing to hostile demonstrations the political agent at Hit, who was withdrawing by train from Samarra, north of Bagdad, was fired on and compelled to return. The 85th Brigade reached Museyib on the Middle Euphrates, and found i that the bridge across the river was partly destroyed.
