t>r. Reekie moved, according to notice of iwotiwi, that the following proviso he added to the resolution regarding the retirement of teachers passed by the board in 1909 : " That, "while the resolution in general be adhered to, in certain special cases the board shall determine the question of Abe retirement of a teacher or officer of the board upon its merits." The original resolution provided for the retirement of male teachers and other officers on attaining the -age of 65, and of female teachers at the age of 60. Mr. King opposed the amendment, which he said would cause a great-deal of* trouble, and interfere with promotions. Mr. Burns remarked that the amendment of the original resolution would cause endless trouble among teachers who considered themselves quite capable §of carrying on after the age set for retirement. The motion was lost, only the mover voting in favour of it. The question of providing accommodation -for country school teachers -was referred to in a memorandum from the department, suggesting that where there were three or four small schools within a radius of five miles it might be possible to erect a teacher's residence in the most central position, so that three or four women teachers employed in those schools could live together, and otherwise provide for themselves. The matter was referred to the inspector. A recommendation by the senior inspector that the Birkenhead side school be constituted a main school as soon as necessary transfers in regard *to staff can be arranged was adopted, it also being decided to erect four additional class rooms.
