ARREARS IN TAXATION.

Saturday. : Ever since Mr. Justice Chapman gave his decision that racing and trotting clubs were liable for five years' income tax the matter has received much attention from those who have the management of the sport under their control. Strong protests have been made by individual clubs, but it was not until yesterday that any united protest of a formal nature was entered. This, it is understood, took .the nature of a deputation consisting of representatives of racing and trotting clubs and members of Parliament to the" Prime Minister at Wellington. - Stress"was laid on the injustice "of the income; tax being made retrospective,, and ib was pointed out that if the- claim were enforced . many struggling clubs . would be financially embarrassed.. * ;■: The deputation received a very sympathetic hearing from Mr. Massey, who admitted i the ; hardship that would be caused. Though the proceedings were not open to press representatives it is understood -. the '■' Prime Minister promised to have .the arrears of income tax remitted,
