CHALLENGE SHIELD MATCH.

AUCKLAND DEFEATS NELSON*

r The first challenge match of the season for the New Zealand Hockey Shield was Played between Auckland, holders, and Nelson at Remuera. on Saturday \fternoon. From the bully the Kelson forwards penetrated Auckland's defence, and Cooper was called upon to save. An attack by Nelson, with all the forwards taking part, ended in Dee • scoring Nelson's first goal; making the haft-time scores: Auckland, 2: Nelson, 1. r Auckland were first away when the second spell opened. .but a shot by Grice was blocked by Harris. Nelson then attacked, and some fine forward work was stopped by Slom&n intercepting and hitting on to Robert&haw, who'sent on to D. Alexander, but Harris again proved safe. From a corner for Auckland A. Alexander's shot was "wild. The Auckland forwards maintained the attack, and finally Robertshaw, availing himself Of an opening, scored: Auckland 3, Nelson 1. Some further forward movements by both teams were nullified by sound back play. Harris, for 'Nelson, playing a great game. Grice Was now prominent in a fine run down the oentre, his pass to Bobertshaw finding the latter offside. Grice later sent the ball to Nelson's Quarters, and D. Alexander, coming in fast from the right, completely beat the goalkeeper, and scored: Auokland 4, Nelson 1. Keeping up the pressure, Auckland caused Harris to hit behind, and from the corner Macken Scored with a hard shot: Auckland 6, Nelson 1, This sparred Nelson to greater effort* and only some good defensive work by England sent play back to midfield. Several rushes by Auckland were successfully stemmed by Harris, who was proving- a tower of strength to his side. Nelson then attacked, and a shot from Parker went wide.. Bobertshaw worked the left wine for nearly the whole length of the field, Weblev brilliantly intercepting and finding touch. Auckland returned to the attack, Macken and Grice ending a brilliant movement by the latter scoring another/ goal with a good shot from the edge of the circle Auokland 6. Nelson 1. The home team were now having considerably the better of the plav, the Nelson backs becoming demoralised by the rapid work of the Auckland forwards. Soon afterwards Grice again . scored* and the game ende^l: Auckland 7 goals. Nel«on 1. Messrs. W. Dee (Nelson) and E. E. Madden (Auckland) were referees.
