THE ART EXHIBITION.

SOME NOTEWORTHY PICTURES

DISPLAYS IN SPECIAL SECTION.

The Auckland Art Society's aihibitidn attracted large attendances on Saturday afternoon and evening, great interest being taken in the fine display of pictures. Among those depicting New Zealand scenery, the work of C. Blomfield is, as usual, of high standard, his pictures of the Southern lakes and kauri forests of the North being among the best shown. " Autumn Pastures," by Flora Scales, shows this artist at her best, her pen and ink sketch also exhibiting much artistic skill. The dainty illustrative work by Joan Pocock deserves a word of special mention, being in a class' of its own, and showing unusual ability. «. Herds" •> Smith's sketches are of conspicuous merit, while the pictures by Evelyn Munday, Ivy Perry, and Alice Why to contribute to the success of the water-colour drsplay. D. J. Payne has no particularly ambitious work on exhibition this year, having confined himself chiefly to a series of small historical Maori studies. Therf are not many flower studies exhibited, but what there are show that the artists have managed to get away somewhat from the conventional cluster of roses and violets. B. E. Chappie's " Aaron's Rods" is a fine piece of work, the spray of jicaranda by Mrs. H. A. Greenwood, and I. Spragg's wattle also calling for mention. _ Three displays in the special art section nhow that art in Auckland is not entirely confined to paint and brush, these being a group of mode's by R. 0. Gross, three exhibits of exquisite needlework by Miss Briar Gardner, and an embroidered picture frame by M. Oliphant. But one wonders that these should be the only exhibits in a branch of art t'nat offers infinite rar.„'e of selection and wide opportunities for skill in design and handiwork.
