AX ALLEGED ESCAPEE.
Daniel Murray, who is alleged to have, escaped from the gaol at Mount Eden, on j January 10, appeared before Mr. J. F. Wilson, S.M., at the Police Court jester'-' day, on ii charge of stealing clothing valued at £16, and also of escaping from custody before the expiration of his term of imprisonment. 1 Hector McCormack, residing in St Mil- ! tin's Lane, oft Symonds Street, gave evi- ! deuce that the clothing had been staler, from his house during his absence. • Archibald Alexander Douglas, acting , ' principal warder at the Mount Eden gaol, , stated that he was on duty on January • 10. Shortly titer two o'clock he noticed . a rope oi blankets hanging from an upptr i cell window. The rope had an iron stone- , breaking chisel on the lower end, and was attached to the bars of the cell. The i warder stated that the prisoner must haT» climbed up the rope from the courtyard - in a corner where the sentry could not ,! s<w him, and swung over tho outside wall. , I Henry Josephs, another warder on duty j 'that day, gave'corroborative evidence. , The accused was committed for trial it th?
