Ith has been the subject of an' appeal to the Prime, Minister. The council's decision -was taken on a petition, bat a deputation ..' almost :as 'numerous as those who signed ■ the.petition opposed the "change. The councilresolution to make the change' '• was carried by three votes to one in an unusually small meeting of the council-.■ ;';-. with only "four present, including the ,- Mayor, Mr. J. Dent. . A * telegram was sent "to" Mr. Ss3s Masseyih* to which the following , reply ;was r made :— " Statutory clos-' - - ing day for the combined district .. - : r of Whangarei and Kamois fixed in ac- ■--, cordance with the, poll held in 1915, and - can. be {altered only in accordance with a similar poll. See section 17 of the Shops and Offices Act. The Borough Council has no power to alter the closing day."
