Frequent comments hare been, made of late to the effort that a proportion of the train, fares are not collected by some pf the conductors. ' A statement on tho object was made yesterday by. the Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gurtson.' Ho said the matter was under consideration by the committee of the City Council ad the Tramway* Union; * /* toon as the now' agreement was : finally ratified—and he hoped this would be effected on Tuesday, following the'meetings of •the various local bodin on Monday evening— question would be further taken up with the represent*. tives of the men. The latter were in accord with the council in demanding a stoppage of this evil The public should understand thnt ins condition complained of obtained on some of the cars on thi part of only a few of the conductors, said the Mayor. He was clad to say, on behalf of the council, that the gtttK majority o. the tramways employees were a fine stamp of ma*. The small minority would not be tolerated, and adequate actios, would be immediately taken. In this matter of non-coil xilion of fares, ..aid Mr. Guflson, a section of the public was not altogether free from blame, and the council would have a word to say to that section. Connivance on the part of the travelling public would have to be dealt with. The whole matter had been one of the subjects considered at the recent conferences he hid had with the representatives of the local bodies.
