OPENING OP THE SEASON, The Auckland Hockey Asacv'iation commenced its season at Bomuera oil Saturday in fine weather. The grounds were in excellent order, and some close and interesting games resulted. University defeated Somerrille by 6 goals to 2, Edendale beat Areta by 4 goals to 1. and Mount Eden defeated St. Luke's by a similar score. UNIVERSITY .V. SOMERVILLE. University defeated Somerrille by 5 goals to 2. University attacked at i.lio start, and a good passing rush by their forwards, carried the ball into their opponent' circle, Sealers scoring. University returned, but a mis-hit Allowed Somerrille to clear. The respite, however, was only temporary, for University were coon back again. After defending their own goal for somo tune, Somerville carried play to Univeriity's circle, and Menxies equalised ths ecoies. University 1, Somerrille 1. , ' ,_ . ~ On resuming after the interval University soon had their opponents on the defensive, and Somers added another goal. Somerville | retaliated, but off-side play spoded their chances. University reversed the position, and Somers scored again. Almost immediately he added his fourth goal. Somerville rallied, and Meniies hit a goal, while just before time Waddingham scored for University. University 6, Somerville 2. Mr. £*. Madden was referee. EDENDALE V. ARETA. Edendale defeated Areta by i goals to J. AreU presiied at the commencement, but Edendale returned play to midfield. Mon : teith carried the ball to Areta's circle and passed to Paice, who found the net. Flay was up and down the field for soma time, and then Edendale attacked .again, Hallam saving. However, Monteith gained possession, and after a run passed to Price, who again scored. He netted the ball almost immediately, the scores at half-time being: Mendale. 3; Areta, 0. ~,,..,,, After the interval Arot* attacked, but their effort was soon suppressed. Play then settled in Areta's circle., Hallam saving. The ball was taken to Edendale s territory. Cooper just missing a coal. Areta kept up the pressure and Eobertshaw was successful hi finding the net. Just before time Grantlc-y scored for Edendale, and the game ended. Edendale, 4; Areta, 1.

MOUNT EDEN V. ST. LUKE'S. Mount Eden defeated St. Luke's by i goals to 1. When the'game opened Tward Juried play into Mount Eden's territory. but Jarman relieved with a long hit. Play was in neutral territory for some time, Ad then the Mount Eden forwards broke away. A passing bout gave M. Alexander a chance, but the goalkeeper managed to turn the shot, and the ball went outside tho net. St Luke's then attacked, and Duncan, after carrying the ball to the circle passed to Mead, who scored. Mount. Eden worked their way into St. Lukus'j circle, and after a melee, Eankin evened up the scores Mount Eden maintained the pressure, but a, free hit brought relief. Mount Men, however, returned, .and Rankin scored again. At half-time the scores were: Mount Eden.' 2; St. Luke's, 1. On resuming, Mount Eden again attacked. M Alexander just missing the net. They continued to press and M. Alexander added another goal. Shortly afterwards Mount Eden had their opponent vigorously defending, and K. Alexander fount the net. There was no further score and the game ended: Mount Eden. 4 goals: St. Lukes, 1. Mr. L. C. Kent wag referee/. SECOND GRADE. University defeated North Shore by 1 goal to 0. Elcoat scored for the winners.
