The Secretary of the Railway Officers' Institute telegraphed to the Minister for Railways to-day as follows : -_" \y e urgently request that no member of the Railway Officers' Institute be railed upon to perform Second -Division duties during the present crisis. The institute is no party to the dispute, and, for the future welfare of the Railway Department, it i« most advisable that our members should n.>t be brought into conflict with member? of the Second Division." Mr. Denneby (president of the institute stated that it was a fact that some men,! hers of the institute were running eiirines ■which had bfen sent out with train* today. Those men had not volunteered for such service. However, the rules were very wide, but if any member of the institute declined to perform Second Division work the institute would stand by him The institute did not want the publ c to forget that the officers had their own dispute with the Department, and thai they intended to press their claims.
