THE VICE-REGAL ENGINE.

DENIAL OK INTERFERENCE.

The allegation that the engine of the train in which the Governor-General travelled to Rotorua on Tuesday had been tampered with, is denied by the repairing staff employed in the enginesheds. One of their number stated yesterday that what happened was a pure accident. The engine in question was. he said, in the yard, when the hinge of the drop-grate broke and allowed a mass of metal, weighing l£e.wt to 2cwt, to fall into the ash-pan. On account of the great heat nothing could be done to remedy the matter until the metal had cooled. Consequently another engine had to be requisitioned for the train, and every assistance was given by the stag to the driver to change his engine. When the first engine had cooled sufficiently the repairing staff fitted in a new fire bar. There was nothing very extraordinary in the accident, which had happened before on occasions, and it was a mere unfortunate coincidence that it shored have occurred to the engine of the Vice-Regal train.
