ASSAULT ON DRUNKEN MAN.
FINE OF £5 IMPOSED.
Assault upon a drunken man was the basis of a charge in the Police Court yesterday, against David Lloyd, 38 years of age. Mr. J. E. Wilson, S.M., presided. Sub-Inspector Wohlmann said that the accused on Saturday entered a hotel where his wife, with whom he was not on friendly terms, was cook. A lodger named Chaplin, who was then under the influence of drink, was at that moment bending over the cook explaining the contents of a telegram which had just been delivered to him. Lloyd, misunderstand ing the situation, knocked Chaplin to the ground and rained a shower of kicks on his head and face. Chaplin's face and head were badly cut, his teeth loosened, and his clothes damaged. Later the accused returned to the hotel, and met his wife coming from Chaplin's room, where she had been ordered to take some food to the injured man. Without waiting for an explanation, it was alleged, he struck her a blow on the eye. The magistrate said the assault was brutal, and imnosed a fine of £5, remarking that Chaplin could bring a civil action to rerover his medical expenses from the accused.
