NEW FORM OF WHARF SHED
SCHEME FOR PRINCE'S WHARF
REPORT BY THE ENGINEER.
A scheme is under consideration by the Harbour Board for providing an improved form of wharf sheds on the new 'wharf about to be substituted for the, . present Hobsori Street Wharf and to known "as Prince's Wharf: , . ■. "["""<■''?/•• V A report presented to the board" 'yesterday by the -• acting-engineer, '--"3MisJ**D. Holderness, stated that the traffic manager desired to know'if it would be po.'isible to provide for the upper floors- of the- sheds to be carried right across the roadway, thus converting the top floors of the. two sheds into one large storage area of a total width of 220 ft. He also asked if the.sheds could be constructed with flat roofs,' - and open storage space provided on theiri. There vere no engineering difScultieSj but if the beard decided on this' coarse it would be necessary to provide fouijetayons capable of carrying the ultimate maximum loads. Two-storeyed reinforced concrete sheds with fiat roofs, to carry l£~c'wt per square foot, would cost approxiniatejy £25,000 each, and the approximate cost of constructing the floor and roof 320 ft long between the two sheds would be £40,000. In addition to these estimates the heavier pile foundations necessary would require extra outlay. If,, however, the girders were allowed to extend above the* floor level, the cost of the roof and floor-could be reduced to £25,000 ~• while the roof only would est -approximately £6000. Should an overhead floor not be constructed, and it was desired to facilitate the transfer of cargo between the upper floors of the sheds, overhead runways could be provided at an approximate cost of £1800 each. The report was referred to the board in ccmmiir.ee. ■ ...•-.
