CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, THE GOVERNMENT CRITICISED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWJ> CORRESPONDENT.] TAURANGA, Tuesday. The annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held last evening, Mr. J. Murdoch (president) in the chair. The annual report dealt with the past year's activities. The report expressed disappointment with the chamber's dealings with Government Departments, and stated :— We are afraid to think of how many deputations have waited on Minis*ters from time to time regarding railway matters, including a harbour bridge, with no more fruit than that of promises or of being referred to 'my colleague.' Even now with the war a thing of the past, and when there should be a decided improvement in the getting of labour and material, we see no haste in the bridge building^, The bridge is a standing joke with visitors to our town The energetic way in which our committee found men for railway work when the Government folded its hands wearily, and said they could not be got, is a fine argument as to the value of our chamber's work." The report was adopted. The election of officers resulted :—President, Mr. W. J. Baigent; vice-president, Messrs. C. F. Washer and A. J. Merrilees; secretary, Mr. B. C. Kobbins; executive committee, Colonel Ward, Messrs. J. C. Adams, J. H. Beale. W. H. Gifford, D. H. L. Corrigan. J. G. Green, H. ASharp, C. C. Norris, T. Moncur, J. Wrigley, and J. Murdoch. It was decided to endeavour to secure an early visit to the district of the Minister for Public Works. , The secretary reported that be, .had telejrraphed to the Governmentwith a ascertaining whether ments could be made to pay faxes of children to Auckland from T«W in connection "with the visit of the Prince- of Wales, seeing that the railway lares of children were to be paid- Ihe reply, however, had been unfavourable, and further efforts had failed to secure any assistance whatever to afford ihe children of th» district an opportunfty of seeuig th£ Prince. ■ > - " t ''> : '' ; ;~\ f ' * __.
