CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

TRANSHIPMENT OF GOODS.

TRADE WITH MELBOURNE.

The council of the Chamber of Cam. .merce met yesterday, Mr. A. S. Bankdrf presiding.

The need far- improvement in the method of getting goods from inward vessels, and of taking them to outward vessels was brought before the council in . a communication from the Importers and Exporters' Association. It" -was stated that apparently tile only effective method of improving matters would be i"or the Harbour Board to undertake the receiving and delivering of goods. In view d the fact that come years ago the chamber declared against such a practice, it was recommended that a special* meeting of members be held to ascertain whether opinion was now favourable to the change. During the discussion it was stated that the system had been introduced some time ago in Wellington, and business men there werestiongly in favour of it. The report was adopted, and farther _ action deferred pending & reply to inquiries which have- already been mad a as to the working of the system, in Wellington. . A letter web received from tie Melbourne Chamber of Commerce with re-

gaxd t° the development of farther trade per medium of the Canadian Government lin© of steamers, just established, which would shortly be tradir" from Melbourne to Canada via New Zealand. It was sas-eested that, as space would be reserved for New Zealand exports to Canada, Una might well be filled with Australian produce or manufactures for Dominion ports. The letter was received, further consideration being deferred pending th« action of the Government in regard to a resolution cassed at the Chambers of Commerce Conference, urging Government action- in the provision of sufficient freight to cater for direct . trade between Australia and New Zealand.

An invitation was received from the National Foreign Trade Council for membere and business men visiting America to attend fee Seventh National T>ade Convention to be opened in San Francisco on May 12. The council agreed to bring the matter to the attention of business men likely to be visiting the United States at that time. The question of shn>r>insr space for kauri feum was dealt with in a letter from * the secretary to the Board of Trade, Wellington. He stated that 140 tons measurement was allotted to- kauri gum in the ilaikoura, which loaded at Auckland last month, and 250 .tons in the Whakatana, loading this month.
