At the end of 1916, he was sent by New Zealand headquarters to organise the Ophthalmic and rhino-laryneolosioal departments of No. 2 New -Zealand General Hospital Walton-on-Thames, and remained on fl*a staff as surgeon m charge of these wards until the conclusion of the war.
