WATERFRONT STRUCTURE.

The expansion of the commercial activities of Auckland is being* clearly manifested by the continuation of building operations in the • city, notwithstanding the difficulty of obtaining supplies of suitable material and the great increase in cost of all building requisites. Among a number of large buildings in course of construction is a block being erected for Mr. J. M. Mennie, adjoining ' the Lyric Theatre, in Symonds Street. It will have a frontage of 104 ft and a depth of 170 ft, and will consist, of three storeys in front, with a much greater depth at the back, owing to the allotment having ' a considerable.. slope The structure will comprise five shops, ' a hall and subsidiary hall, and two independent suites of rooms. The hall,' which will be tilled with a gallery, will have seating accommodation for 1000 people, and will be devoted to the use of the St. Andrew's Society. It will have a floor space of 87* ft "by 50ft. The subsidiary hall will be available for concerts and other social fitherihgs. The main entrance will face ymohds Street. The building will be the largest in Symonds Street. The erection of a six-storey building in Quay Street for the Huddart-Parker Shipping Company is now under consideration by the company.. Plans have I been prepared for a structure to occupy the • Harbour Board section between Endean's Buildings and the premises of Messrs. Lichtenstem and Arooldson. The building will have a narrow frontage to Quay Street and a depth of 85ft, extending to the vicinity .of the railway station. It will be erected on a pile foundation in reinforced concrete, and will be of •an \ equal height to Endean's Buildings. The ground floor will be occupied by the Huddart-Parker Company, and the re--mainder of the building will be fitted as i offices for renting.
