RETAIL COST UNDER REVIEW, ■As result of the'recent increase in coal miners' wages, coal is to be increased. The Taupin Coal Mines, Limited, , has announced/the following increases to retailers from Monday last: Household coal from 8s :6d aj ton to £1 10s 6d, steam^c^'from I£l 4a *o £1 6s, "through" coal from -1& 6d .to £1, slack from to 8s; The average increase is Is 6d a ton, but for the bulk of the output, which is sold, for household use and steam purposes, the increase is 2s a ton. The prices quoted are f.o.r. at Huntly or Botowaro., : t .„ It is understood that all other mines throughout New Zealand are passing on the extra -wages charge but the increase in the price of coal is not uniform, owing to the fact tha(* until this national agreement the miners -wire working under local agreements which were not uniform. It is stated that the increase in the case of certain southern goals' is as much as 58 a ten. The Taupiri Company has notified the Board of Trade of its increases.
