SUMMER TEMPERATURES.

JANUARY IN AUCKLAND.

CONSISTENT FALL LAST WEEK.

In view of the "cold snap" experienced throughout the Dominion during last week, a review of the temperatures for the first fourteen days of the month, with the average temperature for the same period, is of interest. '•..'. The official figures recorded in ihe Albert Park by Mr. F. A. F. Burnett show that during the early days of January the temperature was very variable. A rise or fall of five degrees in 24 hours was no uncommon thing. Since last Monday the temperature has been falling consistently, with the mult that on Saturday the reading was as low as 56.5 degrees, as compared with 66.5 degrees on the same date last' year. The average mean of the readings for the last fortnight was 64.45, as compared with 60.6 and 65.7 for the same periods of 1919 and 1918 respectively. ' The average reading for the first fortnight of 1917 was 65.9, and for 1916, when tha temperature was unusually low, 61.3: degrees. The lowest mean reading during the portion, of the month under review was 59 degrees at 9 a.m. on January 10; the highest was 69.75 degrees at 9 a.m. on January 5.' During the corresponding period of 1919" the lowest and the highest mean readings were 57.25 and 64.25 degrees respectively. From these figures it is seen that this year the average mean temperature for tho first 14 days of the month is about four degrees higher than that calculated last year but should the present cool weather continue the indications are that the average for the whole month will be lower than it has been for some considerable timt.
