FIRE ON A STEAMER.
BALE OF FLAX DESTROYED.
SEVERAL OTHERS CHAIRED.
VESSEL LITTLE DAMAGED.
A fire broke out at 7.30 last evening among bales of flax in the hold of the Northern Company's steamer Gael, berthed at the King's Wharf. The vessel arrived from the Piako River on Saturday morning, with her hold full and a part deck cargo of flax. At. 7.20 p.m. yesterday, when the company's watchman passed the vessel, no. signs of a fire could be seen, but shortly afterwards smoke was seem issuing from the hatch. The fire brigade was quickly on the scene, and soon had the fire 'under control.
. One bale of. flax was in flames, and had to be thrown into the harbour, while others were smouldering, but were kept from breaking out into flames. The seat of : the fire was located Dear the after bulkhead, which walls off the boiler from the hold. Over a dozen bales of flax were charred, but the only structural damage was the slight burning of the bulkhead.'V' ; -. . " ;•."". "..", ,
Afire broke out on the same steamer on December 11 last, when,she was in the Piako River. On that occasion more flax was burnt, and a' considerable amount of damage was done to the hatches and lining of the hold.
