MARINE ENGINEERS' STRIKE.
A NEW OFFER MADE. Bv Telegraph—Press Association— (Reed. 12.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, Dec. 19. The Controller of Shipping has conveyed a new offer to the Marine Engineers' Institute, and a special meeting of the men has been called for to-morrow to consider the matter. The prospects of a settlement are brighter.
It was earlier reported that there had been a development in the marine engineers' strike, indicating that it might spread to vessels on foreign articles. The Eastern and Australian steamer St. Albans was due to sail yesterday for Japan, via intervening ports, -when the engineers refused to sail, and the vessel was unable to laave. WHEAT TO BE DEARER. « PARITY WITH OUTSIDE PRICES. (Reed. 12.30 am.) SYDNEY, Dec. 19. The Minister for Lands states that in view of the New South Wales wheat crop providing hardly enough for seed purposes, grain will have to be brought from other States. He foreshadowed an early increase in the price' of' wheat. The Wheat Board in Melbourne had decided that prices throughout Australia should be brought up to approximate parity with those ruling outside the Commonwealth. This would mean that millers and others would be required to pay about 6s 6d to 7s a bushel.
