The Committee for the Relief of Distress in Vienna has issued a public appeal for funds in English newspapers. The appeal states that deaths from enfeeblement are occurring on an appalling scale. The hospitals are reduced to their last extremity. The signatories to the appeal include Earl Haig, Lord Cavan and General Lord Home. The Government fully sanctions and approves the appeah. and will give pound for pound assistance.

Mr. Cecil Harmsworth; UnderSecretary of State for Foreign Affairs, speaking in the House of Commons, said that the food situation in Vienna was critical. There would be no food in Austria after the weekend. The Allies are doing their utmost to hasten relief.

A message from Paris states that the Supreme Council has decided to send to Austria 30,000 tons of wheat stored at Trieste. The Allies will guarantee the revictualling of Austria until April, when they will grant Austria a substantial loan or credit.

The Daily Telegraph's correspondent at Milan says that the situation in Austria is so desperate that the provinces of Vorarlberg and Salzburg and the Tyrol are agitating to break away. Vorarlberg desires to join Switzerland, and Salzburg and the Tyrol desire inclusion in Germany. The Tyrolese threatened to break away forcibly, declaring that the Austrian Republic is unable to feed the people. The Tyrol Diet passed a resolution asking Vienna to obtain from the Supreme Council at Paris permission for the Tyrol to join the German economic system. The Supreme Council has notified Herr Renner, the Austrian Chancellor, that it will not permit any measures impairing the integrity of Austria or compromising Austria's political or economic independence as provided by the Peace Treaty. The Allies conferred" with reference to assisting Austria.
