REARING GAME BIRDS.

CENTRAL HATCHERY SCHEME APPROVAL IN AUCKLAND. The establishment of a central hatchery for the rearing of young birds for the benefit of all the game districts of the Auckland Province was under consideration of the council of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society Jast evening, apropos of a letter from the Whangarei Society suggesting that all the societies of the province should unite for such purpose. In discussion it was mentioned that a similar scheme was contemplated five or six years ago but was deferred by the outbreak of war. The opinion was expressed that the district behind Matakohe, in Hobson County, was the best breedingground- for birds in the Dominion. On the other hand it was considered that the present gam« farm at Cambridge was highly suitable for bird culture, and central enough for the whole provincial district, and also served the society's purposes admirably. While the society has a large amount of capital invested in the Cambridge establishment, there was a general feeling in. favour of co-operation with the societies of other parts of Auckland, and the idea of a general scheme was warmly approved. It was resolved that the Whangarei Society be informed that the council was unanimously favourable to the project, and a sub-committee consisting of Messrs, H. H. Ostler, C. Culpan, A. Mackenzie, and B. Grayson was appointed to draw up a scheme in time for the council's February meeting, to be subsequently submitted to a conference of the acclimatisation societies of the district.
