MAILS FROM OVERSEAS.
i IRREGULARITY IN SERVICE. ;' * PROTEST IN AUCKLAND. The irregularity in the mail service be- > tween Great Britain, America, and New . Zealand was discussed by the Council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce yes- , terday, Mr. M. M. McCallum presiding. , The subject was raised in a letter from i the Farmers' Union Trading Company, ' complaining of the inconvenience to AuckE land businesses, and urging the expediency of the chamber making application t to the Government for more regular services, especially from America. The chief ' difficulty was; caused by the delay be- » tween the arrival of cargoes and clearing . papers, there being a lapse of three weeks t in some cases, so that the unloading had » to- be ' done without the documents, i Mr. McCallum said the chamber had } made representations time after time, but . for some reason documents could not be . posted on the vessels carrying the goods. There was some question about signing the papers after the ship was cleared. ! Mr. J. AUum stated that letters from . Britain were taking eight weeks to arrive. , Blame attached to the Imperial Govern- ' ment, and not to the Dominion authorities. It was a serious matter, as it was ' costing importers a lot of money. ' The matter was referred to the Import- ' ers' Committee, with power to act and to 1 report. j
