— —«. ,— BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES. MR. J. BITCHENER. ' Mr. John kitchener (Waitaki) was born in the English Midland countries in 1854. He lost his mother in early childhood, and in 1875 bis father came to New Zealand and settled in Waimate. Mr. Bitchener was educated at the Waimate Public School. , Afterwards he worked in sawmills near Waimate, and for four years at various Southland sawmills. Since that time, with the exception of a few months spent in Australia, he continuously lived near Waimate. He was employed on various stations before he took up a farm of his own at Hook. The first positk-n Mr. Bitchener held on a local body was that of chairman of the Hook School Committee. For eleven years he has been a member of the Waimate County Council, and he has also occupied a seat on the Timaru High SchooLßoard, on the Timaru Harbour Board,, and on the Waimate High School Board. He is now president of the South Canterbury Farmers' Union and of the Waimate branch of the union; a member of the Advisory Board of the Farmers' Union in Wellington; chairman of directors of the Waimate Co-operative Flour Milling Company, and a director of the Canterbury Farmers' Co-operative Association. MR. W. S. GLENN. Mr. W. S. Glenn .(Rangitikei), was a member of the famous All Black Rugby' team which toured Great Britain in 1906-7., He is now a settler in the Rangitikei district. He went to England in 1915 for the purpose of joining the military forces, and obtained a commission in the Royal Field Artillery, with which he saw service in France. He rose to the rank of major, and won the Military Cross. In local government he has had experience as a member- of several bodies in the Taranaki district. He has been a member of the , Mangawbero Road Board and the Wanganui County Council, and president . of the Makirikiri branch of the Farmers" , Union. He is a member of the Wanganui Agricultural Association. i MR, M. J. SAVAGE. ] Mr M. J. Savage, (Auckland West) i was bora at Benalla, Victoria. He was ; originally a miner, and later was manager ; of the Rutherglen Co-operative Company. ■ He came to New Zealand about twelve years ago. He has always taken an active part in Labour matters, and at present is national secretary to the New Zealand Labour Party. Mr. Savage is a member of the Auckland City Council and the * Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. He unsuccessfully contested the > Auckland Central seat at the 1911 and ' 1914 elections. r _____ ; MR. W. E. PARRY. 3 Mr. W. E. Parry (Auckland Central) has been intimately associated with various Labour organisations in New Zealand for a number of years. He is a native of Orange, New South Wales. He came - to New Zealand about 18 years ago. . At one time he was president of the . Waihi Miners' Union. He was a memf ber of the executive of the New Zealand j Federation of Labour, and vice-president t of that organisation until the formation s of the United Federation of Labour in 1913. He was a member of the execnr tive of the Social Democratic Party, and j shortly before the war was organiser of the Manawatu Flax Workers' Union, giv- * ing up that position about the time war ' broke out in 1914. In 1918, Mr. Parry i was appointed secretary to the Coal Miners' Federation. He resigned that j position in December. 1918. At present he is a member of the executive of the New Zealand Labour Party. Mr. Parry had not previously sought election to Parliament. e 1 MR. W. D. LYSNAR, 5 Mr. W. D. Lysnar (Gisborne) has been a e resident of Gisborne for fully forty years. a He practised as a solicitor for a number 5 of years, and then devoted his attention " to sheep-farming ' and other interests. He -* holds extensive areas of land at Mangatu £ and in other parts of the district. He is 1 chairman of directors of the Poverty Bay Meat Company, which he was instrii- ' mental in forming, and which a few weeks a ago purchased the steamer Admiral Cod- " rington for the carriage of local produce to Britain. He has taken a strong part in e opposing the requisition of meat and wool e and in preventing trusts from controlling > colonial produce. Mr. Lysnar has taken r an active part in public life, having been e Mayor of Gisborne for a number of years v member of the Harbour Board, chairman » of the Farmers' Union, and other institu- ™ tions. Mr. Lysnar stipulated, when being v nominated, that he should have liberty to r visit England next year.
