An interesting case was heard at the I Police Court to-day when Hooker and • Kingston, Ltd., milliners, were charged j with having committed a breach of the ; Stamp Act in not stamping a receipt for , the sale of goods of a value of over £2. { A member of the firm stated that the ; document was not a receipt, being merely a docket for checking sales and assistants. ' If customers asked lor a receipt they were : given one. I Counsel for defendants stated that the i point was very important to the trade in general. The "document was not a receipt, but was merely part of the system of the firm's accountancy. No name appeared on the dockets, merely the department and the number of the assistant, and the amount of the purchase. The magistrate held that the docket was a receipt, and was considered by tho customer as such. He inflicted a nominal penalty of ss. Counsel indicated that he would appeal.
