BUILDINGS IN SYDNEY.
NEW ZEALAND COMPANIES, j THREE NOTABLE STRUCTURES ' [FROM OT7R OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] SYDNEY, November 27. A magnificent new building, known as Union House, lias been erected by the Union Steam Ship Company at the corner of George and Grosvenor Streets. It is of 14 storeys, and it rises to the full height permitted by the building regulations. It is 150 ft from the street to the parapet. The building will ..be ready for occupation early in the New Year. The building dominates that section of the city by its colour as well as by its size. From a distance it appears quite white, am effect achieved with facings of terra cotta brought from San Francisco. The building has several new features. Orte is a ventilating system which renews the air in the whole of the building eight times every hour. Another is an arrangement by which this firc-proof building, if threatened by fire from its neighbours, can be protected by a barrage or curtain of water. The basement and the first two floors comprise the offices, which will be occupied by the Union Company and the P. and O. Company. Another fine new building in course of erection is at the corner of Hunter and O'Oonnell Streets, opposite the ancient offices of the Sydney Morning Herald. This edifice is for the South British Insurance Company; and, from what little can be seen of it now, it promises to do credit to the. New Zealand corporation. Another building which New Zealanders can contemplate with pride is that of the New Zealand Insurance Company in Lower Pitt Street. It stands out with distinction from among a number of notable blocks in this well-known business section.
