This is considered striking evidence of tie sue£Sss ml , 8 harbour improvement worksHie JVhakatane Harbour Board is asking for a. further £15,400 loan to continue the works. It is considered thai when the pinnacle rocks m the mam channel have been blasted out, a larger steamer than the Tasman. the resent Auck.and-Whakatane steamer, will b able to work the port. DAMAGE TO THE KARORI. The Karori, which sustained damage to her hull while navigating the channel between Quarantine ana Goat Islands recently, was docked at Port Chalmers last week to undergo repairs. The damage is fairly extensive. The steamer evidently first touched the rocks well forward, for close to the base of the stem, on the port side, there is a pronounced dent. About 40ft further aft the hull is also . dented. Then farther aft —m the vicinity of the engineroom the principal damage has beeh sustained, and it is shown by a number of deep dents, some of them close to the keel plate. In some cases these dents have loosened the ends of the eheet-plates from the butt staps, thus causing leakage. There are . minor dents risjht aft, towards the propeller, one of these being on the starboard side. The bilge keels are intact, but at one place on the port side is a dent near the bilgekeel. To repair the damage about 10 shell plates will have to be removed, and Some of these plates may have to be renewed. THE VAN CLOON. The Royal Dutch Packet Navigation Company's steamer Van Cloon, en route from Java to South America via Sydney, arrived at Auckland on Saturday evening and anchored in the stream, She called only to replenish her stores and fill her fresh-water tanks, consequently she did not berth. It is the intention of the company to open up a trade between Java, Australia, and South America, with the possibility of calling at Auckland or Wellington en route. From the time she left Java until she returns there, the "Van Cloon's trip will have occupied three months. She is loaded with coal and a «mall quantity of general car go for Valparaiso and. ports along the West Coast of ! South America' as far north as Mexico. She will load outward cargo at the various ports and return to Valparaiso before taking her departure for Australia. As. the run from Auckland to Valparaiso is about 6000 miles, it will be about thre.3 weeks before the Van Cloon reaches her destination. This was the reason of the vessel's call at Auckland for water. She completed filling her tanks at mid-day yesterday, and resumed her voyage shortly afterwards. PORT OF ONEHUNGA. ARRIVALS.
