Despite a genera.! strike having |een proclaimed bv the Socialists, 1 *11 the public services are working formally. Elaborate military pre- : parations have been made to main- 1 tain order, including the posting of machine guns in the streets. Cavalry • and armoured cars are patrolling . the principal thoroughfares. There have been frequent collisions between the strikers and the police in Rome, Milan and Turin, six persons , having been killed and many wounded. BLOODSHED IN MILAN. COLONEL STABBED TO DEATH. (Received 7.30 p.m.) Renter. ROME. Dec. 3. j Mobs tried to prevent the departure of trains. A policeman and a civilian were killed. During the disturbances at Milan many were wounded and four persons, including a gendarme, were killed. A Royalist. Colonel was stabbed to death in Turin. SPREAD OF THE STRIKE. MORE TOWNS AFFECTED. (Received 7.30 p.m.) Times. ROME, Dec. 3. The general strike has spread to Genoa, Alessandria, Bologna and Civitavecchia, but generally the j position is less acute. Newspapers are being published again. DEFEAT FOR SOCIALISTS. FIRST DIVISION IN CHAMBER. A. and N.Z. ROME, Dec. 5. Signor Orlando, the ex-Premier, who was the Government candidate for the Presidency of the Chamber of Deputies, defeated the Socialist candidate, Signor Lazzari by 251 votes to 143.
