CHRISTCHURCH POST OFFICE.
CONTRACT FOR ADDITIONS. A contract lias been let by the Public Works Department for additions to the Christchurch Post Office. The new building is expected to cost £20,000, which is about 50 per cent, more than the estimate made prior to the war. It is anticipated that if there is a good supply of labour the building will be completed in two years. The foundations were completed about three years ago, but the Department postponed further operations owing to war conditions. The additions to the existing post office building will have a frontage of 60ft to Hereford Street and a depth of 100 ft. The building will consist of three storeys and a basement and the front, from the ground level to the top of the ground floor, will be of Oamaru stone; the remainder of the front will be artistically I set off with pressed brick work, and the building will be of brick. On the ground floor will be boused the Post Office Savings Bank and the money order office On the first floor the letter-earners will be accommodated, and the automatic telephone exchange will be located on the top ]
