STREET WIDENING SCHEME. PROPERTY OWNERS' OFFER. COUNTER-PROPOSAL MADE. The City Council met last evening, the Deputy-Mayor, Mr. A. J. Entrican, presiding. There were also present: Mrs. E. H. Maguire, Miss E. Melville, Messrs. G. Knight, P. M. Mackay, F. W. H. Brinsden, J. Burton, T. Blood worth, J. Demp*ey, G. Baildon, P. J. Nerheny, J. Trevethiek, J. B. Paterson, J. A. Warnock and H. N. Bagnall. The offer of the owners of the land on ! the eastern side of O'Connell Street, from i Shortland Street to Chancery Street, to I dedicate to the council & 14ft strip bo that j 'the thoroughfare might be widened, the ', sum of £8190 to be paid to them by way of compensation, was reported upon by the Works Committee. Its recommendation . was that the council accept the dedication of the strip, thus bringing the width of the street to 33ft, but without compensation to the owners. The committee also recommended that the council should carry out the work of j pulling down the buildings necessary in I connection with the widening scheme, ! forming 3nd laying out the whole of the : road as widened, and walling up the ends i of buildings partially demolished; any I surplus material to become the property ! of the council. The committee's recommendations were ' adopted. WATER FOB THE SCHOOLS. FULL PRIVILEGE GRANTED. The Education Board wrote asking that the question of water supply to schools be again considered, with the" object of extending the concession to inciude water used in sanitary services. Reporting on the matter as the outcome of a d scussion at the previous meeting, the Public Service Committee recommended that the by-laws be altered to enab'e the schools to have the full benefit of the 500 gallons per capita which is granted free, I inc'nsive of the sanitary services. They ■ also recommended that this should operate I forthwith. j Mr. J. B. Paterson said he hoped that outstanding accounts would be withdrawn. j The Deputy-Mayor: No. This is not to ■ be retrospective. The recommendation was adopted. LIGHTING OF PRINCES STREET. NO ACTION TO BE TAKEN. The Works Committee reported upon complaints received Irom 45 residents of Princes Street and the vicinity regarding the lighting of that street, 'the complainants stated that the lighting between Government House and O'Rorke Street was bad. The committee submitted a statement from the acting city engineer to the effect that there were six gas lamps in Princes I Street. It was, he asserted, as well lit as I any other street in the city illuminated by j gas. The electrical engineer had sub- ! mitted a plan for the installation of eight 1 electric lights in the street at a cost of £72 per annum. As he proposed recommending a reduction in the charges for the l ; ghting of Queen Street and Karangahape ; Road, however, he recommended now that j the question of substituting electric lights jin Princes Street be held in abeyance meantime. j The recommendat'on of the committee • was that, as no allocation was available i for add'tional lighting, no action be taken I -* i ti:. „J„„).^J

The Library Committee recommended at the previous meeting that an adequate j sum be allocated from the Grey Lynn j ; 6treets loan for the provision of a library : in that district. The matter was, however, referred back for further consideration. The committee now recommended that no further action be taken regarding the Grey Lynn loan in this connection. The committee further recommended that a section of land owned by the council j in the Great North Roed, and used at i present by the water-works department, ; be reserved for a library site for the ! j district. This was adopted. ; THE DUST NUISANCE. ' USE OF TRAM SPRINKLERS. \ The matter of street-watering was i again under consideration. At the previous meeting the Works Committee, on the recommendation of the acting-city . engineer, had suggested that, owing to the extra cost involved, the tramway ; sprinklers be not utilised this season, but - that the streets should be watered by i means of the council's ordinary plant. 1 This was referred back to the committee, ,' with a view to it conferring with the Public Services Committee on the sub- { i 1 ject. The Works Committee now recommended that the matter be left in the hands of the acting-engineer and the general manager of the tramways. This was approved.
