CLAIMS OF WHANGAREI.
I COUNTY CHAIRMAN COMPLAINS. | [by TELEGRAPH— COKRESPOXDENT.] j WHANGABEI, Wednesday. | Speaking at the annual meeting of the ' Whangarei County Council, the retiring chairman, Mr. J. R. Molnnes, complained that the county had been shamefully treated by the Government this year in the matter of grants. The present system . was most unjust, and he hoped "there ! would be a change in the new Parliament. The Whangarei County was capable of carrying a large population, and of an output sufficient to warrant a direct export and import trade. North Auckland, with its climatic conditions and waterways was I quickly becoming a favourite district.' and ! the duty of the council was to use every endeavour to see that reading facilities closer settlement, and good local Govern - merit were provided and encouraged". The deepening of the Whangarei Harbour, together \ th the other improvements, beint; undertaken by the board, are progressive measures in 'keep ; with , the requ-rements and demands of the dis- ' trict, and should be stronglv supported by the council during the coming year.
