MURDERS AT THE ISLANDS. NATIVES ATTACK BARQUE. (From the HERALD of November 7, 1869.) By the arrival of the schooner Ei;genio from Tahiti we have the melancholy in- I telligence of the murder of Captain ' Blockett, the second officer, a passenger, and rive of the crew of the barque Moaroa, at Gilbert's Group. The barque left Auckland about live months ago, and several of her crew were shipped at this port. The natives appear to have taken possession of the ship, and after killing eight persons were about to attack the chief officer, Mr. Steenalt. and the re mainder of the crew, who at the time were battened below. Mr. Steena.lt., with great courage and presence, of mind, blew up a portion of the deck with gunpowder, which '. so frightened the natives that they immediately jumped overboard and swam for the island (Begrois). 'I he chief officer then made sail, and succeeded in reaching Tahiti. -■ |
