Speaking at the anniversary gathering of the Christchurch Commercial Travellers and Warehousemen's Association on Saturday night the president, Mr. H. Wauchop, emphasised the need of fostering British trade. All had read how the Germans were endeavouring already to flood the markets with their goods and if the New Zealand Government should prove weak enough to allow such goods to come m it was to be hoped that no sale would be found for them. It was the duty of all travellers to push all colonial-made goods. The collection of rates owing on native lands is still proving a difficult task for many County Councils. It was reported at a meeting of the Patea County •Jouaal on Monday" last that no rates had been collected from native owners this year, and that from £1000 to £1500 was still outstanding.
