"CLEANING-UP" WEEK.
A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN.
PREVENTION OF ACCUMULATION. The complete success of the eleaning-up week in the city was emphasfsed by the acting-city engineer in a report to the City Council last evening.' The report stated that so much waste material was offered that it was necessary to keep extra carts employed for an additional week. Altogether 40 tons extra of ordinary household rubbish was dealt with at the destructor, while no lets than 400 loads of old tins, etc were carted to the tip, this involving an approximate expenditure of £140. The report drew attention to the abnormal quantity of waste material that was allowed to accumulate, and recommended that steps be taken to prevent such accumulation, even though resident? would be required to have the rubbish carted away at their own expense.. The report added that apparently many people had avoided disposing of waste material in the hope that the council would inaugurate a " cleaning-up" cam> paign. A number of business firms had requested that the carts be sent to their primuses to remove what proved to be ordinary trade refuse. These requests were refused, and the applicants were notified to remove the refuse in their own carts.
The report was referred to the Works Committee.
