LOWER PRICES CAMPAIGN.
SUCCESS IN AMERICA.
VANCOUVER, Aug. 29.
A Chicago message states that the prices of foodstuffs for all kinds continued on the down scale to-day, in consequence of the campaign against the high cost of living. Live hogs sold for 6s 5d a hundred pounds and cattle for 6s a hundred pounds below yesterday's prices. Stockyard officials complain that the public is buying little dressed meat. An Ottawa message states that the Canadian Government announces that it will start a country-wide campaign against high prices similar; to that being carried 011 by the United States. An inquiry will open to ascertain who is guilty of overcharging. The announcement adds: " There seems to be reasonable ground for expectation ! that prices are about to drop, and that it will be advantageous for the holders I to sell promptly and avoid the losses that will undoubtedly occur."
