FRENCH SHIP SUNK.
LOSS OF TWENTY LIVES. RAMMED OFF NEWFOUNDLAND. I Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 7.25 p.m.) MONTREAL. Aug. 7. A message from Halifax states that the steamer War Witch rammed and sank the schooner Gallia off St. Pierre. Twenty lives are believed to have been lost.
The Gallia was a wooden three-masted schooner of 275 tons gross, owned by a French firm and registered at St. Msdo. St Pierre, the scene of the collision, is a French island off the south coast of Newfoundland, used as ' a cod-fishing station.
