NARROW DININGROOM.
This ainingroam was not onriy handicapped by its extreme narrowness, but by the fact that traces of bygone decoration in the shape of a highly brnato overmantel and a 4ft 6in dado of lincmsta still clung to it- Anyone who hap ever tried to remove- Lincmsta when' it has omce taken root knows that it is a harder task than to uproot bindweed from the garden, So this was allowed to remain, but a veil of bright green paint was drawn discreetly over it and the surrounding woodwork. Above the space between. the dado and cS'Jing only about 3ft was papered in green &sba white willow paper. Next the overlaantel was dealt with. The mirror, with its beautiful bevelled edge, was ruthlessly ripped out and its place taken by a piece o* brocade which made a charming backrrronnd to a row of pleasant pots and jars. Below, the icrt jirate disappeared and a Earless grata took its place with a snr:*ninJ of cofpery lustre tiles. The shape of the room made a sideboard isndesipable, but two low glass-fronted «!»pboards fitted into the recesses on either ■ride of the fireplace were a satisfactory robstitute, anc* showed off superfluous glass and shina in a most attractive way. Ihrer each, from the top of the dado, hung an electric light with a copper shade, and above them on the wall a pair of round mirrors in dull black frames. Apricot casement curtains reached to the sill of the bay window and long straight ones in tones of green paid yellow linen at each end ! were connected by a frilled vallanea stretching right to the top. High-back seats and a long narrow oak table were the only possible furniture for this room, which though designed for the country would be equally enited to the town.
