MISSIONARY WORK.
1 " qi ' LECTURE ON CHINA. A lecture on missionary work in China was delivered in the Y.M.C.A. yesterday afternoon by Dr. Randolph Patterson, who, prior to going on active service, was for I five years a medical missionary in Canton. I Dr. Paterson said that 100 years ago, when Morrison went to China he risked his life every time be went out of doors. To-day in. Canton the Morrison" Memorial Y.M.C.A. was one of the finest buildings in Southern China. Speaking- of the Chinaman, the lecturer said he had bad qualities, but good qualities were certainly ' nob absent While, on the one,hand, he was a great gamble* he was not addicted to strong drink. Dr. Paterson stated that during his earlier, years in China he often Performed operations under an umbrella. To-day in Canton the Presbyterian Mission, which he represented, possessed an up-to-date hospital, equal, except in size,, to the Auckland Hospital. During the afternoon Mies Gweft Fordham rendered a sacred solo, and? the orchestra, under Mr. J., W. McElwain, led the singing. "_' : ..;--'"" "'<•"■'
