WAR MEMORIALS.
PROPOSALS IN AUCKLAND.
VIEWS OF LOCAL BODIES. War memorial schemes were discussed by the Mount Albert Borough Council at its meeting last evening.. The matter arose through the receipt of a letter from the City Council, soliciting the council's financial co-operation in the erection of a memorial museum in the
Auckland Domain, and of a monument on | the old. dock site. ! The Mayor, Mr. T. B. Clay, stated that ! before the council moved in the matter it must decide whether it would co-operate in the main scheme, as suggested bv the City Council, or whether it would confine its efforts to the erection of a separate , memorial in the borough. i Opposition to the City Council's decision ' to erect the memorial on the dock site ' was voiced by several members, one sug- j gesting that the revenue from the site ; which he considered unsuited to the erec- • tion of a memorial—should be utilised in ' subsidising a soldiers' hostel or a similar i institution. , Finally, the matter was referred to the j Legal and Finance Committee, to report : at the nest nieeting. j The matter of war memorials was also! discussed by the Onehunga Borough Coun- j cil last evening, arising out of receipt [ of the City Council's request for co- j operation. I The Mayor, Mr. J.' Park, suggested that the council might support the erection of the museum, without committing itself ■ financially. Personally, he was opposed i to the erection of a monument on the old dock site. Mr. J. Stoupe expressed the opinion that an extra wing to the hospital would be a more suitable memorial. Mr. Bassett said he was opposed to any provincial memorial that did not provide some practical assistance to incapacitated returned soldiers*. Mr. Higgins said the council should not be committed to any financial assistance to either scheme. The letter was " received."
