CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES. COLLEGE RIFLES DEFEATED. UNIVERSITY 3, PONSONBY 1. The second round of matches in the Auckland Hockey Association's championship competition was commenced on Saturday. The damp ground was not conducive to good play, and the standard of the games was not high. College Rifles were defeated, for the first time this season, at the hands of Mount Eden. College Rifles thus are closely followed by University, who beat Ponsonby. St. Luke's beat Areta. and Training College beat Somervell. Details of the matches are: — COLLEGE RIFLES V. MOUNT EDEN. The teams were: — College Rifles: Goal. Lepine: fullbacks. Sloman, Horspool; halves. Preston. Swan. Baildon; forwards. R. Garrard. W. G-ar-rard. Fletcher, Harland. Grayson Mount Eden: Goal, Hill; fullbacks. King, Jarman; halves. McMurtrie, Wheeler, Hunt: forwards, D. Alexander, A. Alexander, Johns. Rankin, R. Hunt. Mount Eden attacked from the bully, and a. pass from Hunt, at half, gave Alexander a chance, but Lepine cleared. Mount Eden 1 Mount Eden rallied after this score, and a swift attack resulted in Hunt sending in a fast shot, which Sloman hit clear. Alexander had a shot, but the Rifles' goalkeeper saved. After some fast play, with a couple of corners, another Mount Eden player sent in a brilliant scoring shot. Hunt put Mount Eden in a good position, but a free hit eased the pressure, and. aided by Grayson and Harland, Rifles advanced. Loose play outside the College goal was cleared by Garrard. However. Mount Eden soon came back, Alexander and Jarman being prominent. After some very fast give-and-take play. College Rifles were forced back and then Alexander sent in a. fine Bhot for Mount Eden.
