BOMBS IN THE MAIL.

AMERICAN OUTRAGES.

PLOT AGAINST OFFICIALS.

VANCOUVER, April 30. The New York postal inspectors have found 17 infernal machines in mails addressed to prominent officials, similar to those sent to Senator Hardwick and to Mayor Hanson, of Seattle. Two bombs were discovered in San Francisco, addressed to the District Attorney, and to his assistant. The packages found in these and in other cities were marked with the novelty name, " Gimhel Brothers' Department Store," but the managers of that store denied any knowledge of the packages, j Among those to whom the deadly pack--1 aces were addressed were the Postmaster- ! General (Mr. Burleson), the Secretary for Labour (Mr. Wilson), the Attorney-Gen--1 cral (Mr. Palmer), the Commissioner-Gen. eral of Immigration (Mr. Caminetti), ' Mayor Avian, of New York, Governor Snroul. of Pennsylvania, Mr. Rockef«ller, rid' Mr. Morgan, and the Solicitor-General (Mr. Lamar). Evidently a wholesale attempt was made to kill the leaders in many cities. I The authorities fear that some of the packages have not been discovered. • ' The New York postal authorities have declared their belief that the mailing of bomb? to prominent- persons was intended as a Red demonstration in connection with May Day. The package* containing the bombs were mailed at 8 o'clock on Tuesday night, presumably at the main post-offices in 33rd Street. They were scaled, making them sub ject to first-class postage, although they bore only sufficient postage for parcels. This led to their being held for insufficient postage. A post-office clerk having read of a bomb explosion at. the home of Senator Hardwick, he notified his superiors that the packages were held up. The bombs were in green boxes two inches wide and eight inches long, and were creased in rapping'paper an.l scaled with led wax. The addresses had been typewritten. A message from Atlanta /Georgia) states that Senator Hard wick'.- wife was burned, md a negro servant had his hand blown off, by an infernal machine, which was received in the mail this mornim;. Tli" bomb wan postmarked "New York." and was manufactured Iron) a toy container, sold at Oimbel Bros.' store in New York City It was inscribed similarly to the bomb recently sent to Mayor Hanson at Seattle.
