PROTECTIVE TARIFFS.
Sir,— read that local tilemakere, furniture man-Jacturcrs, and others are agitating for Increased duties so that they may not ho faced with lower prices for foreign goods. It will be interesting to note what the Government, pledged to reduce the rcst of living, will do in this connection. If there is one direction in which prices should come down with a run, it is in the cost of roofing for houses. A _ reduction here would benefit fho building and allied trades, surely more important than the tile industry. And it would benefit everyone who lives in houses, a class, it will be admitted, wnich is " fairly" numerous, more so than those engaged in tile manufacture. Fbee Toads.
